"Leaders and those responsible for governance are taking effective action to provide education in the current circumstances"

"Leaders are determined for all pupils to receive a broad education despite the challenges caused by Covid-19.  You ensure that education is available to all pupils either on site or remotely"

Ofsted February 2019

"The Trustees are devastated by the overall grading from Ofsted.  As a Trust we can assure you that we will be relentless in ensuring this judgement is rectified by the end of this year, to reflect the quality school that King John is."

Mr S Taylor, Chair of Zenith Multi Academy Trust

"Good teaching, learning and assessment enables students to achieve well by the end of key stage 4.  The curriculum is broad and balanced with a large number of students engaging in, and enjoying a wide range of trips, visits and extra-curricular activities.  Students feel safe and staff are visible.  We have well trained pastoral year teams who get to know students well and go out of their way to meet their day to day needs."

Sixth Form

The King John Sixth Form is in the top 15% nationally, benchmarked against 2817 schools and colleges in the UK for A-level outcomes.

Students go on to university, employment and further training from the sixth form.  Information, advice and guidance about post-18 provision supports our students accessing the correct courses and succeeding in their next steps.  133 students went on to study at university in September 2018.

It is worth noting in 2018:

  • 50% of students achieved A*-B at A-level;
  • 12 students achieved 3 As or better at A-level;
  • 31 students achieved A A B at A-level;
  • 36 students out of 46 achieved A*-B in maths at A-level.

Tech Levels

Tech levels are level 3 qualifications for students wishing to develop the specialist skills and knowledge for technical occupation or industry.  They lead to recognised occupations, for example in engineering, IT accounting or professional cookery.

Successes

Sporting Successes 2018/19

The school has had fantastic sporting successes around the district and Essex in all year groups in rugby, football, basketball, cross country, cricket, athletics, tennis, swimming, hockey, netball, gymnastics, rounders and badminton.  A comprehensive list is available to download below on this page.

Duke of Edinburgh

We have had a high success rate with our Duke of Edinburgh scheme in the school.  As a centre we hold a 100% pass rate at bronze level and have been recognised by the County for this.  This year in year 9 we have been able to offer 25 students a chance to enrol on the scheme after receiving 75 applications.  At silver level we have a group of 21 students enrolled for this year’s scheme.  Last year, 9 students at gold level completed their award, the highest number in the County.

Creative and Performing Arts

Students have been making the most of opportunities to develop their creativity and entertain us.  A large number of students across all year groups were involved with both the dance show in February 2019 and the School Will Rock You performance in December 2018.

The school runs a successful KJ Art Academy.  Students benefit from a ‘rich’ offer including the LAMDA qualifications and the expertise of professional instructors in the creative and performing arts faculty.

Trips and Visits

Students have been making the most of opportunities for trips and visits.  In 2017/18 we offered 68 different trips and visits with 3908 places on these trips.  In 2018*19 so far we have offered 24 different trips with 980 places available.
