Teaching and Learning

Teaching & Learning at The King John School

“If we create a culture where every teacher believes they need to improve, not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better, there is no limit to what we can achieve.” - Dylan Wiliam

At The King John School, we believe that exceptional teaching changes lives. Our Teaching & Learning approach is rooted in ambition, reflection and a shared commitment to continual improvement. We want every young person to experience classrooms where curiosity is nurtured, challenge is embraced and success is possible for all.

Guided by our PRIDE values, we are building a culture where learning is purposeful, inclusive and evidence-informed. We believe that great teaching is never static; it evolves through collaboration, reflection and professional dialogue. Our staff continually refine their practice through coaching, feedback and deliberate professional development, ensuring that every classroom experience is shaped by the very best educational research and shared expertise.

At the heart of our approach is the understanding that the practitioner is the intervention. We invest heavily in our teachers because we know that high-quality teaching has the greatest impact on student outcomes, confidence and future opportunities. Through our Pedagogy in Practice model, staff engage in regular cycles of deliberate practice, reflection and instructional coaching, fostering a culture of professional curiosity and continual growth.

We are committed to adaptive teaching that enables all students to thrive. Teachers use responsive strategies, expert questioning, modelling and formative assessment to ensure learning is accessible, ambitious and appropriately challenging for every learner. Our classrooms are places where students feel safe to think deeply, articulate ideas and learn from mistakes.

Alongside academic excellence, we place a significant emphasis on literacy, recognising that reading, writing and oracy unlock success across the curriculum and beyond. We believe every teacher is a teacher of literacy and that developing confident communicators is central to social mobility, aspiration and achievement.

This section provides an insight into the work we are doing to continually strengthen teaching and learning across our school community. Under our “Here’s What We Are Working On” banner, you will find examples of current practice, professional development and key priorities. Under our Literacy banner, we have a range of information on:

  • Reading – developing fluency, vocabulary and reading for pleasure
  • Handwriting & Writing Fluency – building confidence, stamina and clarity in written communication
  • Oracy – creating confident speakers who can think critically, discuss thoughtfully and communicate with precision

Through reflective practice, collaboration and a relentless focus on improvement, we aim to ensure that every student at The King John School experiences teaching that inspires ambition, nurtures belonging and enables excellence.
