Education Extra
Enrichment opportunities are a key part of life here at King John School, whether it be visitors to school, after school clubs, school events, local trips, or even residentials and visits abroad.
Our wide range of activities are designed to complement our formal curriculum plans, bringing learning to life in a visual, concrete, meaningful way for our pupils. By making these links explicit, these opportunities develop cultural capital, create a sense of joy and wonder, develop new skills, and foster a life-long love of learning. Pupils are actively encouraged to try new things and we listen to student voice about clubs and opportunities that they would like as part of their education extras experience.

Ski Trip
Students have visited Italy on their most recent Ski Trip. An opportunity to build confidence, learn a new skill and make unforgettable memories.
Lunchtime Concerts
MFL Trips
Language students visit Barcelona and Northern France to explore the areas and immerse themselves in the French and Spanish culture.
Duke of Edinburgh
Taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award (Bronze / Silver / Gold) allows students to broaden their skills, experience and resilience. From volunteering to expeditions, this opportunity has it all.
Workshops
We regularly host workshops for our students to attend and participate in. Students have visited MOVE IT Dance Exhibition and Salon International at Excel. They meet industry professionals, explore potential college options, take classes and see amazing performances. Visitors such as actors, dancers, authors and guest speakers all contribute to our in-school workshop offers.
Humanities Experiences
History students visited Berlin to gain an insight into 20th century European history. They explored a variety of social, economic and political change whilst forging new friendships, exploring a new city and creating everlasting memories.
Globe
Students visited Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre to gain an insight into the venue, take a tour and even participate in a Romeo and Juliet Workshop. Students experienced the world-renowned cultural venue taking in one of London’s most famous sites on the River Thames.
Careers
Our careers support offers students opportunities to develop practical work experience, develop interview skills enhancing their employability.
Tea and Toast
Each morning, Tea and Toast provides students with the opportunity to access support, meet new friends and eat and drink to ensure they are ready for the day.
Careers Fair
Our careers fair is a great opportunity for our students to explore pathways and meet potential employers from a range of sectors.
Theatre
Students visit many theatre productions across the year including SIX, Wicked, Grease and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
Rewards Trips
Students visit Hollywood Bowl to celebrate positivity and build friendships beyond the classroom.
Extra Curricular
We have a variety of after-school clubs to enrich students’ lives. This includes Dungeons & Dragons, Chess, Sports and Tech Clubs.
Sport Camps
The rugby team visit Wales to participate in a training session and explore the world of Welsh Rugby.
Community
Students are offered many opportunities to engage positively with the local community. For example, we hold coffee mornings and clothes swaps events to invite the local community, parents and carers into our school. We also support local care homes and host events such as Family Learning Week whereby parents and carers get to join in with the wonderful after-school clubs we have here.
College and University visits
Students are taken to universities to explore their colleges, listen to academics and look at the services available.
Jack Petchey
Students are offered the chance to participate in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge testing their public speaking skills and boosting their confidence.
Trips to Outdoor Activity Centres
We visit Stubbers and Danbury to give our students the opportunity to explore nature and develop team building skills to boost their resilience.
International Dance Performances
KJS Dancers were given the opportunity to visit New York and create unforgettable moments. They performed onboard Intrepid, watched Moulin Rouge and had a dance workshop taken by Clay Rice-Thompson.
Fundraising
We believe that fundraising for charity is key to allowing students to become rounded individuals who display dignity and integrity. It also supports positivity and equality for everyone involved. Students regularly host fundraising events such as bake sales, discos and games to raise funds for charities. Sixth Form students have organised a very successful staff charity football game which also brings the whole school together to fundraise.
