Literacy at the King John School
Literacy at the King John School.
Here, at the King John School, we run a number of schemes to support students make progress with their literacy.
Here at the King John School we like to give you opportunities to take on some responsibility. This lets us see what you are made of and you get the opportunity to shine!
Becoming a Literacy Leader is one way to do this!
Literacy Leaders are selected from Year 9, 10 and 11 and these students go into tutor groups from younger years to do a literacy based activity with them once a week.
Word of the Week:
Every week King John will announce a word that is to be used an understood as much as possible over the coming week.
Try and use that word as much as you can (both verbally and written) and you will get achievement points for the correct use!
Your tutors will tell you the word every Monday morning and it will be displayed in every classroom in the school.
At the end of each half term there will be a WOTW competition where you need to write a sentence using all the words from that half term. Winners get prizes!
AR is a computer programme we have at The King John School to support your reading and literacy. You will have one specific AR lesson a fortnight to work on this skill.
Each lesson you will have time to read and do quizzes on your chosen book. From there we can asses your reading level and advise you on books to take out of the library.
The quicker you finish each book – the quicker you move up the reading levels and on to more challenging texts!
You also will have designated tutor times to progress with your reading.
