Sensors

A sensor is an input device (like a keyboard or a
mouse). Sensors pass messages to the computer about certain conditions.
Here
are some examples of sensors:
Contact Sensors
For example, a pressure mat, which detects when someone is approaching an automatic door.
Proximity Sensors
These detect when an object is near (but not actually
touching). A proximity sensor might be used as part of a burglar alarm system
Heat Sensors
For example, a thermometer. A heat sensor could be
used to control the temperature in a greenhouse.
Light Sensors
Detect the level of light
Sound Sensor
For example, a microphone. Sound signals are picked
up and converted into an electrical signal, which can be passed to a computer.
Copy this into your exercise book and fill in the
missing words:
Sensors are _____ devices. They detect certain
conditions and pass _______ back to a computer. For example, a _________ sensor
could detect movement. A _____ sensor could be used as part of a temperature
control system.
Can you think of any more examples of where these
sensors might be used?
