The Engineering and Product Design department teaches students in Key stage 3,4 and 5. There are four Engineering and Product Design teachers supported by one technician.
In year 7 and 8 students study the Design circle, during which the develop their knowledge of how to design, develop, produce and evaluate their own unique products based on a specific brief that is set out by the teacher. The focus will differ from year 7 to year 8 with a different part of the design circle being assessed. Students will also learn about the fundamental practical skills that they will need should they chose either subject at KS4.
Students can study Product Design or BTEC Engineering at KS4. Product Design has been part of the curriculum for the past three years. Last year’s Product Design cohort achieved the national average for A-A* pupils. Both of these subjects aim to develop pupil’s knowledge and skill levels that they have begun in KS3.
At KS5 students can study AS/A2 Product Design: 3d Design, during which time they produce a highly refined piece of practical work that is based on a specific client’s needs.
